MAPLE TWIST ROLLS

Updated: Feb 10, 2020

I grew up with my Aunt making maple twist rolls and they became one of my all-time favorites. Even though the recipe calls for pecans of a certain amount, it is up to you how much you really want to use. If you love pecans like me, then maybe chop up some pecans fine and add the icing. You do not need a mixer for this recipe. It is all done by spoon and whisk.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED

DOUGH:

½ tsp vanilla

1 tsp maple flavoring

1 egg

¾ cup of milk

¼ cup of butter

3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

1 /2 teaspoon salt

1 package active dry yeast

3 cups of flour

In pan warm milk and butter until melted. Let cool to Luke warm temp. Pour into bowl and then stir in yeast until dissolved. Add into bowl vanilla, maple flavoring, egg, salt and sugar. Mix well with spoon and then slowly start adding flower. Place bowl in a warm area and let rise 1 hour. As dough is rising go ahead and prepare filling

FILLING:

1 cup sugar

½ cup chopped nuts

1 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp maple flavoring

¼ melted butter

Mix in a small bowl sugar, nuts, cinnamon and maple flavoring together. Blend in melted butter and mix well. Set aside.

ICING:

2 cups powdered sugar

3-4 tablespoons milk

1 tsp maple flavoring

¼ tsp vanilla

2 tablespoons melted butter

In a bowl using whisk add butter, vanilla, and maple flavoring. Stir in slowly powder sugar and adding milk. Do not make icing until placing rolls in oven.

When dough has risen for 1 hour punch down dough and divide into three sections. Roll each section round until able to place on a 12 inch pizza pan. I spray my pizza pan with cooking spray. Lay one layer onto pan and then sprinkle half of filling over layer. Repeat one more time and then lay last layer on top. With a small glass place in center of dough on pizza pan. With a pair of kitchen shears cut small slices starting at edge and working towards cup. You will get 14-16 slices. Twist each of these triangular shapes 4 times. Remove glass and let rise until doubled. This can take 30-40 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes until golden brown in color. Remove from oven and top immediately with icing. Optional to sprinkle chopped nuts on top. Enjoy!
